Hot Fun in the Cold of Winter!
Come Sing A Cappella Style |
Barbershop Style
Workshop for
Young Women
January 26, 2008
Worcester
Crowne Plaza Hotel
Do
you like to sing a cappella? Ever tried barbershop style? Come spend the day singing, performing and making new friends. You
will work on three songs, Kokomo, Ain’t We Got Fun and Blue Skies. Learn
the ins and outs of barbershop style a cappella singing. The day will be filled with lots of singing while learning specific
barbershop techniques.
This
educational workshop will be led by Lorraine Barrows. Lorraine is the immediate
past Director of Education for Sweet Adelines International, a position she held for 9 years. Prior to that position, Lorraine
was a public music school teacher in Yarmouth Maine. She
directed both boys and girls barbershop groups while in Yarmouth. Lorraine
was awarded the Music Educator’s National Conference award in 1994 for her contributions and service to public school
music education. She was the founding director of the Royal River Chorus of Sweet Adelines and sang bass for a regional champion
quartet. Her experience working with middle school and high school students is extensive as is her love for doing so.
Plan
to arrive around 8:30 AM. Warm-ups will begin promptly at 9AM
with song review and sectional work to follow. Bring a bag lunch or purchase a sandwich at the hotel from the lunch cart.
After lunch, work continues on the songs including the addition of some choreography. You will have both a morning break and
an afternoon break. At 4 PM, you will begin final preparations for your 5:30 PM performance. And just in case you think
there will be no one attending your performance, approximately 500 members of North Atlantic Region 1 Sweet Adelines will
be at the same hotel for an educational weekend. You can count on these women to show you their enthusiastic support. Parents,
friends and the public are all welcome to come and hear you sing. Plan to perform in your own summer vacation wear –
bright colors, Hawaiian shirts, sun glasses. Bring a beach towel for some added fun. Please, only appropriate clothing, no
bare midriffs/bathing suits.
For
you teachers, we invite you to sing with the students if you wish. There will also be some time for teachers to hear from
Lorraine about the opportunities for young girls singing barbershop style a
cappella and how to incorporate this art form into your school programs.
If you are interested, please complete the enclosed form and mail or email it back
so we can send you the music and further information right away. There is no cost to you except for your travel and lunch.
Please contact us if you have any questions about the workshop or if we can help you in any way. We promise a day of fun and
lots of singing!
